Racism is not always violent like the terrible, unfortunate and unjust brutal killing of George Floyd and many others like him.
It is also about having less opportunities for ethnic minorities.
As an Asian woman from humble beginnings, it is rare to see other ethnic minorities in white-dominated Eurocentric creative industries.
To break down these doors I had to work extra extra hard and was microscopically scrutinised because of my ethnicity. Often too scared to speak out because it seemed like it was a privilege to be working in this industry.
Experiencing unconscious bias because of my skin colour is more prevalent than you think. It may feel uncomfortable for you to admit this, but you may have done it!
We do not want to be victims, just treated equally. Empowered and accountable only to ourselves and not to racist perpetrators.
It has become “trendy” to portray diversity in fashion and beauty campaigns but how many ethnic minorities or women of colour are hired behind the scenes at a senior level or at all???
If agencies and brands truly want to represent diversity - why not listen to our POV, respect us and support us in breaking down the barriers, to engage with our communities?
You can do more than just post on social because “Black Lives Matter” is trending right now.
Walk the walk and support your fellow ethnic minorities in the workforce too.
The Institute of Practitioners set targets for ad agencies to have 15% BAME representation in agency leadership roles by 2020, but the figures aren’t anyway close to that goal.
We should always be united.
